So that's why I've got two great Holiday dessert ideas for you that won't pack on the pounds.
First, is Grilled Banana Splits. Here's the simple ingredients you'll need:
4 ripe bananas
2 Tbsp chocolate chips
1/2 cup non-fat, frozen vanilla yogurt
4 tsp chopped walnuts
Here are the easy-to-follow directions:
1- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2- Place each banana on its side on a piece of foil. Cut a slit lengthwise across the top. Leave the skin attached.
3- Push 1/2 Tbsp chocolate chips into the slit of each banana.
4- Wrap the bananas with the foil, leaving the top open. Grill or bake about 15 minutes or until the chocolate melts.
5- Loosen the foil and press the bananas open a little.
6- Top each banana with 2Tbsp of the frozen yogurt and sprinkle with 1tsp walnuts.
That's it for a nutritious and delicious treat!

I'm sure you've heard before that your post-workout meal is actually your most important meal of the day (aside from breakfast).
I'd have to agree with that for the most part because refueling your body with the right combination of nutrients is SOOOOO vastly important to repairing your muscles from the breakdown of a workout, and keeping your metabolism sky high.
From the research about post-workout meals:
"A recent 12-week study says that those who failed to consume a post workout meal immediately after their workouts suffered a lower metabolism, loss of fat free mass, and had clear indications of muscle loss - while their counterparts (those who consumed a post workout recovery meal) significantly lost more fat, increased lean muscle, improved their metabolism, and increased dynamic strength."
I've noticed that many people are confused as to what actually makes a good post-workout meal. A couple common questions about post workout meals:
1. Aren't post-workout meals just important for building muscle? Do they matter at all if my goal is fat loss?
2. Is it best to use one of the fancy post-workout drinks or shakes that you see in the magazines or is a whole food meal better? What's the best combination of carbs to protein to fat in a good post workout meal?
3. How quickly after a workout is best to consume my post workout meal?
Answers:
1. Post-workout meals are important for BOTH muscle building and fat loss!
Always remember that one of the most important aspects of long term fat loss and maintaining a lean body for life is raising your overall metabolic rate by building and maintaining adequate lean muscle mass throughout your body.
By consuming a proper post workout meal after every workout, you assist your body in repairing and building lean muscle throughout your body. The more lean muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate... hence, you lose fat easier, and it is MUCH easier to stay lean long term.
2. Whole foods or supplement shakes? This can be done either way, but I'm going to show you some guidelines why some post-workout shakes are better than others and some whole foods are better than others. Either way, you can make it work.
First, keep in mind that your goal throughout the majority of each day is eating small whole food meals frequently that digest slowly with high fiber and a controlled glycemic response (blood sugar). These normal daily meals should also contain healthy fats and slowly digested proteins to keep a steady supply of amino acids.
Well, when it comes to post-workout meals, you can almost use the exact opposite strategy of your normal meals. With post-workout meals, you actually want a faster digesting carbohydrate source to elicit an insulin response, which surges nutrients and glycogen back into your muscles for repair.
So while I always preach high fiber for most of your meals, with post-workout, you actually want low fiber, high GI carbs, and quickly digesting proteins as well for muscle repair.
Another aspect to keep in mind... while I always preach healthy fats at most of your meals... with the post workout meal, you actually want almost all carbs and protein, and very little fat if any. Fat just slows the absorption and glycemic response which is not what you want with the post-workout meal.
What about ratios of carbs and protein?
I've reviewed dozens and dozens of studies on this subject and it always seems to come back to a ratio of approximately 2 to 1 carbs to protein. This seems to be the optimal combination to maximize muscle repair to boost that metabolism for long term fat loss.
I usually make my post-workout shakes using a frozen banana, whey protein, water, and some real maple syrup and aim for about a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein.

3. How quickly should you eat (or drink) your post-workout meal?
As soon as you can after your workout (the sooner the better)!
Studies show that the sooner you consume your post workout meal following your intense workout, the better your muscle recovery will be, and a higher percentage of the carbs ingested will be used for muscle glycogen replenishment instead of other uses.
The first thing I do when I get back from the gym is make my post workout shake, and this is about 10 min after finishing my workout.

Homeostasis is the property of a living organism, that regulates its internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition.
When you don't drink enough water in the short term -- often the body retains water. It attempts to maintain homeostasis by counteracting the stresses we put on it.
When you drink a lot of extra water - your body excretes more water to maintain balance.
When we weight train -- we actually break down muscle tissue. And the body responds by building new muscle. It attempts to maintain homeostasis by doing the reverse of the stimulus we placed on it.
When a male takes supplemental testosterone -- the body shuts down its own production in a bid to maintain homeostasis.
When we immunize children against disease (in theory) -- we actually inject them with a small dose of that disease. The immune system recognizes the vaccine as foreign, destroys it, and 'remembers' it. When the virulent version of an agent comes along, the immune system is thus prepared to respond. In order to prepare the body to defend against a disease - we expose it to the disease - and it responds by doing the opposite - it destroys the disease.
In almost every situation I can think of, the body tries to maintain homeostasis by "doing the opposite" of the stimulus.
How does this apply to weight loss?
Now we know that while you are doing it -- low intensity exercise burns primarily fat.
Higher intensity exercise actually burns more carb stores than fat.
But in every head to head comparison, high intensity exercise results in more fat loss than low intensity exercise - even though the more intense work may burn a lesser percentage of fat during the exercise session.
Burning glycogen results in a larger amount of fat lost than burning fat directly.
The body responds by "doing the opposite"...

When Do YOU Burn The Most Fat? & Are You A Slacker?

Most every article on this topic begins
with the word "HOW."
"How to burn more bodyfat!"
That sort of thing.
I've written several books on the subject
so that is not the point of today's ah-ha
moment. The point is WHEN.
At what time of day do you burn the
most amount of bodyfat? How can
you use this knowledge to increase
your own fat-burning power?
Sounds interesting... so let's dive in.
First, I want you to remember this old
saying that I came up with about two
years ago. That makes it old enough
to be an old saying...
You burn more fat at night
if you're doing it right.
Next in line is the morning time.
Hokey, but effective... and true. If you
are dialed in with your nutrition plan
and sufficient exercise the night can
become your best friend.
Your body is like a vampire, only it's
sucking on fat cells and doesn't dress
like a high school goth guy.
There are many reasons for this. First,
you are secreting growth hormone in
larger quantities at night. In particular
during the first few hours of deep sleep.
Second, your mind is in the proper state.
Yep: Mental relaxation is a powerful
fat-burner. Decreasing the "stressmones"
(that's what I call them) like coritsol helps
your body shed fat.
Finally, your body is digesting food at
night which requires (you got it) energy.
Energy that comes from your fat cells
if you have your nutrition plan rocking.
Isn't that cool?

Fat loss is like running a business or household budget. You have to control what comes in and what goes out.
And as many successful business owners and household managers will tell you, "What gets measured, gets improved".
That's why, if you are truly committed to losing fat, you need to take measurements of your body (body fat and tape measures of your arms, legs, hips, and waist) and track those changes over time.

High School Musical 3 vs.Boot Camp?
So I took her, my niece and my nephew...and as I expected I didn't really enjoy it all that much.
Not that it was bad, just not my cup of tea, but anyhow...What did I learn?
I learned that no matter how bad it might, be as long as Disney puts it's name on it the kids will come.
The acting was nothing extraordinary put the kids in the theater LOVED it...
So what does that have to do with Boot Camp?

lets talk and your breakfast solution
First, You might get this a few times, I'm sending it out from different email addresses to make sure that you get it. So Please take a few minutes and read it.
Ok,
I know when you all get to boot camp your goals are different. And I know that you might have some hesitation in doing everything that I ask you to do, but let's look at the FACTS.
When you go to a Doctor and he/she write you a prescription be it for meds or a cane or therapy, what ever the case...you do it.
Now lets look at FITNESS (that include weight loss,fat loss,more energy, lean muscle), no matter where you read it or who wrote. Fitness has 3 components to get RESULTS:
1. The RIGHT Amount of Cardio
2. Resistance Training
3. SUPPORTIVE NUTRITION
I control the first 2! I plan on you only doing the Boot Camp(if you do more great), so I know what you are doing for Resistance Training and Cardio. I know each class burns 400-500 Calories and I know your HR is in the 130-140 zone(give or take). There is know way around it.
Now The Eating. Everyone gets information on how to eat to support the demands, not only for camp but for the day too.
There is a certain amount of food that your body needs to Function, weight loss or not, You still need this food. Add exercise and that need goes up. If you believe that eating less food will give you results, then that's ok, but you won't be maximizing your Fitness.
What would happen if you ate more? Let say that week (WEIGH YOURSELF WEEKLY NOT DAILY) anyway let say you didn't lose any weight. Look...you ate more and didn't gain any either.
How weird do you feel when your clothes fit looser and everyone is telling you, you lost weight but the scale has not budged or says you only lost 1lbs.. Did you ever think that maybe you lost 5lbs of Fat and gained 4 lbs of muscle. That to means says 9lbs change.
I know it's a weird concept, Eat More to Weigh Less, But It Works...Just Do It.

100% Responsibility
This will be a very different blog...
I want to talk about being responsible for YOU.
When you go to school, your teachers are responsible for providing you with the information necessary to help you learn, but who's responsibility is it to study and apply that information?
Your mechanic is responsible for taking that overview of your car and telling you wants wrong with it, but who is responsible for getting an oil change every 3000 miles or making sure the car has gas?
When you make the decision to start a new fitness program to change the way you look and feel, if you don't have the information, who is responsible for going out and finding that information?
NOW, once you have the information and the tools who is responsible for taking action 100 % of the time?
We'll get back to that....
If you "hate your job" how productive do you think you are going to be at work?
If you "hate social events" how much fun do you think you are going to have at a party?
How much of the attitude that you have toward change do you think will effect your results?

and it talked about having the right mental attitude...Well how about responsibility?
100% Responsibility
Your thoughts and blames are just memories, you need to draw new experiences so that you can make changes.
If the last 7 diets didn't work and you lost and gained weight...where is the responsibility?
If the last 4 gyms you joined didn't help you, where is the responsibility?
If you drove through one of the many fast food chains and decided it was your chance to support the economy by ordering things that most likely are not going to help you make a healthy difference in you, where is the responsibility for that?

The Next Boot Camp (Re-write your Story)
Hi Everyone
The Next Boot Camp Starts Monday August 4th!!!!
That means we have 4 weeks till Labor Day Weekend....
Now for some of you that means the Last weekend of the Summer...
For some of you it does mean anything...
But the truth is, it's a TARGET Date.....
Target dates are important, because they let us know where we stand and how much we need to do before we get to out goal.
For some of us, it's that High School reunion...a wedding....a vacation...or The Last Weekend of the Summer.
Now for those of you returning to camp, what can you do this time around to kick it up a notch....?could it be staying away from that 2nd and 3rd extra dish??? or just a little cardio on you off days...
For those of you starting this month...what experiences have you had in the past? Have you started and stopped? Quit half way? or kind of put no effort into it?
Well, Let's Re-Write YOUR Story this month....
You are not going to miss a class!
You are not going to cheat on any meals...for the whole month!!!
You will do your bootcamp homework on the weekend!!! and if you are not a Saturday Boot Camp regular, you will attend at least one Saturday morning!!!

According to a new study in the journal "Obesity," 86 percent of American adults will be overweight in 22 years.
If the trend continues, the study estimates that by the year 2048, 100 percent of Americans will be overweight, as will a third of all children.
The study was based on national survey data compiled from the 1970s through 2004.
Obesity rates increased faster in adults than children, and faster in women than in men.
Is that scarry or what???

Would you put Oil in your Gas tank?
We all know your car needs oil....and we all know your car needs GAS...
but would you put oil in the gas tank?
Most likely not...
So, just because you think you're eating "healthy"
or making "healthy" choices, doesn't necessarily mean you are eating the "RIGHT" thing for you....
Today I got this email from, John Berardi,PhD:
"You hear it all the time - from your mom, from dietitians,
from doctors, from coaches, heck, even from your uncle
Jimmy.
Just eat a "balanced diet" and you should be fine.
Of course, the fact that no one ever mentions what actually
constitutes a "balanced diet" only adds to the mystique and
allure of this mythical creature.
However, new research suggests that even when folks try to
eat a "balanced diet" they usually miss the mark.
Indeed, in one recent study, over 70 diets were analyzed and
every single one was deficient in 3 or more nutrients.
And some diets were deficient in about 15 nutrients!"
Now let's switch that term "balanced" to supportive...
Is what you are eating supporting your daily needs and your fitness goals.
If you put 100% effort into you exercises program then you should put 100% into your eating as well...

My client has not lost a lbs. and Miami Lakes is SOLD OUT!!!
One of my clients emailed this to me :
"Hi Rafael, I have to tell you I started the day thinking I was just going to give up.I got on the scale this morning and for the 4th week in a row I have not lost a pound. I was very frustrated,I do everything you say. Eat every 3 or 4 hours, workout, maybe not as much cardio as I could, but still no weight loss. I weigh myself once a weeklike you say to do. Thursday mornings, first thing with no clothes on. So when i got on the scale this morning there was still no shift. BUT THEN I LOOKED UP....I never look at the mirror, but today I did, with my hands on my hips pouting and up-set i noticed something I had never seen before. Everytime i took a deep breath I could see my stomach muscles. I have ABS!!! Then I looked up and down my shoulder were tight and round, my legs always hurt and now I see why, that flab I had in my back is almost completely gone. I can't believe it, my husband tells me all the time but today was the first time I saw it.WOW!!!Thank You. The scale is in the garbage. See you Friday:)"

Bootcamp's a rockin' workout
DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
Classes can be indoors or outdoors or both. On this day, we did plenty of field work -- running around the parking lot, over hurdles and hopping through rope ladders placed on the ground, upper-body work with a weighted bar, windmills, squats, lunges.
After, we went into the community center's gym for abdominals. I was a bit surprised to see the return of old-fashioned sit-ups, which were proven to be less than effective. They also carry greater risk of injury to the neck and back. But more suitable crunches followed. There were even some yoga postures like downward dog.
South Miami Bootcamp's turbo pace and constantly changing activities will have you sweating but trainer Ed Delatorre and his coaching staff don't treat this like the military. They -- and fellow classmates -- offer encouragement. Students said they all saw results and that they look forward to attending -- even at 7 a.m. Saturdays, Adam Lamnin said. ``You feel better about yourself.''

I wasn't 100 percent this particular morning, but when I am I'd love this class. You target various muscle groups and take advantage of the outdoors. There's a nostalgic kick to being on a open field -- like you're a kid again in P.E. class.
