NOVA | Marathon Challenge | Marathon Diary: Betsey Powers-Sinclair | PBS

NOVA | Marathon Challenge | Marathon Diary: Betsey Powers-Sinclair | PBS: "When I started the NOVA training, I joined boot camp as well. [Betsey's exercise boot camp generally met three times a week, at 5:30 a.m.] My boot camp coach is Dutch, and she is what one might imagine, tough as nails. If you can do 25 full-body push-ups, she's going to make you do 50. She pushes you to the limit, whereas Don's approach is the opposite. He pretty much says, 'You need to come with your own expectations and your own capability. And you need to drive yourself.' That was a little scary."

Did You Know???

There are 2.4 million unnecessary surgeries performed in the U.S. every year with more than 12,000 people dying as a result of these procedures.

Approximately 300,000 balloon angioplasties are performed in the U.S. each year. Yet not one study has shown this dangerous procedure to be any more effective than non-surgical treatment.

Studies show up to 70% of mammograms are incorrect.

At the age of 60, 37% of the population takes 5 or more prescription drugs daily.
Did you know that 40% of all hysterectomies performed in the U.S. over the last ten years were unnecessary?

Prescription drugs cause Sixty percent of impotency.

The Vioxx debacle; that one expert claims to have caused 139,000 deaths and serious injuries.

Antidepressants; causing suicide in children.

Recently the pharmaceutical industry, which is suffering from bad press, (by the way, bad press tends to happen when you kill people), has been struggling to find new drugs. “It sees cancer drugs as a well spring of opportunity” for increasing profits, they want to make cancer a manageable chronic disease like diabetes. That way they can keep people on these new drugs for years if not decades. (Financial times, October 6th, 2005 “ New broom waits to sweep through the FDA” page 8) This statement is so amazing it needed to be referenced.

Statin drugs cause cancer and they deplete your heart of Co Enzyme Q -10. Statin drugs actually cause heart disease. This scandal will dwarf Vioxx!

It is amazing to me that most people demand more information when buying a used car than when they use prescription drugs or agree to surgery. Let’s look at the 500,000 Americans who undergo coronary by-pass surgery each year at an incredible cost of 15 billion dollars. Up to 10,000 of these patients die during the procedures: while a staggering 40% are so debilitated by this procedure they never return to work or to a normal life.

1. 75% of the UK population are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.)

2. In 37% of all the UK population, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50%less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Still want a coke?"

5 More Fat Loss Tips and Last Chance To Join This Month

Fitness Boot Camp for Fat Loss

Brought to you by Rafael Moret &

Hi Friends,

At this time of year, we can use every last tip to help avoid
holiday weight gain. And This is also a quick note to let you know everyone
who is enrolled in Boot Camp now will be renewing this week + a few New campers only a few slots remain. Take advantage of the Holiday Promo: Enroll Here

So here are 5 more fat loss tips for beginner & advanced readers.

1) No liquid calories (with the exception of a post-workout drink).

Get rid of all the juices, the sodas, and the sports drinks. Liquid
sugar is the last thing you need when you are trying to lose fat.

You must also limit your alcohol intake - especially if you are
adding mix to drinks...that is a double calorie bomb! A single "Jack
and Coke" is over 200 calories (100 calories from booze and 100
calories from mix).

2) No fast food.

Do not eat at fast food restaurants. Even if you choose what you
think is healthy, remember this:

Fast food restaurants are all about profit.

And in order to profit while giving you cheap, quick, and easy to
prepare foods, the quality of the food ingredients will be poor -
especially the protein.

Now you might have read that you can still make healthy choices at
fast food restaurants. But you know what, that's just
politically-correct opinion. If it's fast food, it's poor food.

Walking into a burger joint and grabbing a chicken breast on a
white bread bun with a piece of old lettuce and a half-green,
half-pink tomato is "barely" healthy eating.

The politically-incorrect truth is that it's going to take time and
effort to eat properly. You will have to plan, shop, and prepare
healthy meals. You will have to spend time cleaning, cutting, and
cooking your food. That's the truth.

But believe me, it will taste so much better than fast food, and
healthy eating will make you more alert. Eating fast food will make
you feel terrible, and will make you want to have an afternoon nap
at your desk.

Make one small improvement to your nutrition everyday for the rest
of your life.

3) Eat more fruits and vegetables.

If you are eating 2 servings per day, then go up to 4 servings per
day by the end of the week. And even if you think you are doing
great by having 5 servings per day, you still need to double that
(take 2-3 weeks to work your way up to 10 servings per day).

Stick with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables - organic if possible.

4) Eat 1oz of almonds or walnuts per day (1/2 oz in the AM, and the
other half in the afternoon).

Most nuts are roasted in oils (possible source of trans fats), so
stick to natural or dry-roasted nuts.

Don't panic...this small amount of nuts won't make you fat, but will
fill you up and help you lose weight.

5) Be consistent with your workouts.

And make sure the workouts are efficient and effective. To make it
easy for you to follow, stick with the Boot Camp workout

It doesn't matter if you train in the morning before or after
breakfast, or at night before or after dinner, or at 1pm on days
when the moon is in line with Saturn...don't worry about the
details, just train consistently.

6) BONUS TIP: Go for a walk after lunch or dinner (or anytime you
eat a big meal). Research shows this will help you control your
cholesterol and triglycerides, plus any movement is better than
sitting around watching the TV and snacking.

Improve your lifestyle everyday,

PS - Change your workouts to beat a fat loss plateau.

Should South Florida Go To Boot Camp?

Miami,FL - It’s another cool morning in Miami. At the park there are joggers, walkers, bikers — and in a corner of the park there are six workout stations set up. Medicine balls, resistance bands, some dumbbells and South Florida Fitness Boot Camps instructor, Rafael Moret, counting down the time with his stop watch.

The people at Boot Camp, are part of a growing number of “boot campers” that take the workout outside of the gym and into parks and other outdoor areas.

The camps have grown in popularity as people look for a way to enjoy the outdoor weather in South Florida while avoiding the hassle of fitness centers and the cost of a fitness professional. No special machines or equipment are needed — the weather is always perfect and the view is spectacular.

But what makes South Florida Fitness Boot Camps ( ) different. There is no drill instructor yelling, there is no running and anyone can participate. “The formula took 3 ½ years to perfect” says creator and instructor Rafael Moret. “It took a lot of time and testing, but our workout guarantees fat burning without cardio and lean muscle development”.

What Is a Fitness Boot Camp?
According to Web “Boot camp exercise classes vary in style, depending on the instructor. But you can generally expect to meet outside, rain or shine. You'll probably spend an hour doing some form of cardiovascular exercise (running, hiking, interval training, or obstacle course challenges), along with strength elements (using dumbbells, exercise bands, or the resistance of your own body weight). You'll also work on flexibility in a stretch portion of the class, which may incorporate elements of yoga or Pilates.”

The fitness boot camp program Moret teaches in Miami and Pembroke Pines, Fl., is taught in “timed circuit intervals“. Moret says this insures anyone and everyone can participate. Participants are encouraged to wear heart rate monitors so that they can see with there own eyes that their heart rate can go all the way up to 180 beats per minute without running or biking or any of those other boring cardio machines. The HR monitors will also show the campers the they stay in “The Fat Burning Zone” during the entire class and can burn up to 550 calories per class. His boot camp is offered four times a day, five days a week, all year. People can pay daily or monthly and are offered a 1 week trial with an unconditional money back guarantee.

This is the most effective fitness technology available. With New Year resolutions coming, this type of training ensures people looking to make significant physical transformations that they will not fail.

Fitness Boot Camps: Should You Enlist? - Exercise and Fitness Tips with Workout Routines, and Mind - Body Fitness on

"Fitness Boot Camps: Should You Enlist? Fans say boot camp exercise classes inspire them while whipping them into shape. By Barbara Russi Sarnataro WebMD Weight Loss Clinic - Feature Reviewed By Louise Chang, MD The year Teri Smith turned 40, she decided it was time to tackle a nagging urge to get in shape. That's when she signed up for her first fitness boot camp class. 'I didn't have any energy and I could feel my age creeping up on me,' says the Pembroke Pines., Fla., mother of two. Her weight had crept up, too. Though she wasn't heavy, the 20 pounds she'd added over the years didn't feel comfortable on her 5-foot, 3-inch frame. A successful graphic designer, Smith had never felt as comfortable in sneakers as she did in front of her Macintosh. 'I didn't have the confidence' to exercise, she says, because she always felt uncoordinated. But when her stylist suggested she try the boot camp fitness class, she worked up the nerve to do it. And she's never looked back. 'No other workout makes me feel so good. It makes me feel like I really kicked my butt,' says Smith, 42, a faithful boot camper for 2 1/2 years now."

3 Ways to Lose Stomach Fat

Did you know the best way to burn belly fat is a shock to most
men and women?

In fact, I often get asked, What's the best way to burn fat and
lose my belly? Do aerobics work better than interval training? Does
resistance training help at all? What should I eat to lose stomach
fat? All of those are common questions.

But here's the truth. Cardio is not the best way to burn fat.

In fact, I've met very few people who have successfully used cardio
to lose stomach fat. And most of those people were young men, and
anything works for them when they want to burn fat.

If you want to lose stomach fat fast, you need to increase the
intensity of your workout by using both resistance training and
interval training to lose stomach fat.

Australian researchers, such as Professor Steve Boucher, even
believe that interval training can lead to a spot reduction of
belly fat. That's something that no amount of abdominal training
can do.

While bodybuilders and young guys without any cares in the world
can spend an hour a day on cardio - and sometimes get results - men
and women who only have 45 minutes, 3 times per week for exercise
just can't depend on slow cardio workouts to burn belly fat.

Let's take a look at the perfect workout plan to get you maximum
fat burning results in minimum workout time.

Here are the keys. First, start with a circuit of bodyweight
exercises to prepare your body for a fat burning workout. This
should only take 5 minutes.

Follow that up with supersets of resistance training using
multi-muscle exercises for maximum metabolism boosting. This works
so much for post-exercise calorie burning than slow cardio
workouts. That will lead to more belly fat burning as well.

After 15 minutes of resistance training, finish with 15-20 minutes
of interval training. Use a warmup, then do a few intervals, and
then cool-down. You don't need a lot of intervals to get great fat
burning results.

With that workout schedule, you'll be in and out of the gym in 45
minutes, three times per week.

Compare that to what most people do, which is run, jog, cycle or
use the cardio machines for 45 minutes straight. Sure, that will
burn calories, but it doesn't build a better body.

Men and women love the fast fat burning results they get from short
burst exercise sessions. Your body was not meant to run marathons.
Instead, it was meant to perform quick bursts of exercise, and that
is why resistance training and interval training sculpt a better
body than long, slow cardio.

The best way to lose stomach fat is to use the following three
exercise methods.

1) Bodyweight circuit training to warm-up the body

2) Resistance training supersets to boost the metabolism

3) Interval training to burn belly fat

Put those three, short exercise methods together into one great
belly fat burning workout if you want to lose stomach fat fast!

How to Live to Be 100 Years Old

How to Live to Be 100 Years Old: "Dr. Oz has something to say that could change your life. 'If you are in reasonable health, there is absolutely no reason why you don't have a fighting chance to get to age 100.' Despite what you might have been led to believe, Dr. Oz says that living to 100 isn't about avoiding diseases like cancer, heart disease or stroke. He says if we could rid the world of those common killers, it would add less than a decade to life expectancy. 'Aging's not about avoiding disease,' he says. 'It's about living with vitality.' In their book YOU: Staying Young, Dr. Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen get to the bottom of the true nature of aging. Some people think living to old age is a forgone conclusion—that it's all in your genes. In truth, Dr. Oz says, 70 percent of how you age comes from how you live. 'We spent a ton of time looking into where the true fountain of youth is—and you know where it is? It's right inside of you. It's in your cells, it's in your 'kitchens.'' How well are you aging? Take the YOU: Staying Young Aging Quiz to find out. Give your brain a boost with this mind game test. You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the brain test. Download it here. How did 100 audience volunteers do when quizzed on their physical, mental and emotional health? Next » "
