No Aerobics for Fat Loss and NEW Bootcamps

Another nail in the "aerobics for fat loss" coffin!

Hey Everyone,

I recently witnessed research that showed optimal fat loss training should not necessarily include steady state aerobic work. (this presentation will be available on DVD soon).

I just came across a new study that further supports what I've experienced. Some of this might look like jiberish ( I like to state FACTS) but make it to the end, read it all.

"Basically the results suggest that 3 x 20 mins of intervals for 15 weeks (8s on 12s off) resulted in significantly greater fat loss than 3 x 30-40 min of aerobics at 60% V02 max for the same time period.

About 3 x as much in fact.

Fat loss following 15 weeks of high intensity, intermittent cycle (like Our Boot Camp) ergometer training
Trapp EG and Boutcher SH
University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia

Previous research has shown that five bouts per week of intermittent high intensity exercise (HIIE) resulted in significantly greater fat loss compared to continuous steady state (SS) exercise (Tremblay et al., 1994).

Purpose: This study examined the effects of three bouts per week of HIIE on fat loss among sedentary young women.

Methods: A total of 45 females, (19–26 years) were required to undergo pre- and posttraining testing including a VO2max test and DEXA. Subjects were randomly assigned to HIIE, steady state, or control groups. Exercising subjects exercised three times a week for 15 weeks under supervision. The HIIE group did 20 min of exercise (8 s sprint, 12 s recovery), whereas SS exercised at 60% VO2max for 30–40 min. Dietary intake was regularly monitored through food diaries.

Results: Mean change for the HIIE group was: total body mass (1.51 ± 3.6 kg), fat mass (2.5 ± 2.6), %body fat (2.6 ± 2.3%), trunk fat (0.14 ± 0.21 kg), and VO2max (0.43 ± 0.16 l/min).

Mean change for the SS group was: total body mass (0.1 ± 2.3 kg), fat mass (0.4 ± 2.1), %body fat (0.6 ± 2.9%), trunk fat (0.1 ± 0.2 kg), and VO2max (0.35 ± 0.06/min).

The control group did not change on any variable.

Conclusions: Twenty minute of HIIE, three times a week for 15 weeks led to significantly greater fat loss compared to steady state exercise.

Anyone who is still using steady state aerobics as the cornerstone of their fat loss program are woefully behind the times."

Basically The Study Shows Interval Style Workouts (Like we do at Boot Camp) for Short Periods of Time (45 minute) 3 times per week, lead to GREATER Fat Loss, More so Than Long Slow Boring Cardio.

WOD and Prograde Valentines day Sale

Your Workout of the Day:
Exercise 1: Bear crawls. Instead of walking on their feet, your trainees should walk like a bear – that means walking on “all fours” (hands and feet, NOT knees). Have trainees walk around as quickly as possible for the duration of the interval.

Exercise 2: Chair steppers. Forget stair steppers – do chair steppers instead. Here trainees step on and off a chair. They step up with their right leg and then pull their left leg up on the chair. Then put their right foot back down on the ground, followed by their left. Next, they repeat the exercise, except this time leading with their left leg. They keep alternating for the duration of the interval. Obviously, the higher the chair or platform, the more intense the exercise.

Exercise 3: Supermans. Have trainees lay on flat on their stomachs with arms and legs off the floor and outstretched. The goal is to hold this position for as long as possible. For variety, you can have them flip over onto their backs, raise their outstretched legs just a few inches off the floor and hold that position for as long as possible.

Exercise 4: Crocodile walk. Here your trainees should be like soldiers crawling under barbed wire. That means they should be face down with their stomachs almost touching the ground. Then they should crawl around until that exercise interval ends.

Exercise 5: Walking lunges. Here your trainees take long, exaggerated steps. They’ll really employ their quad muscles for this exercise, because on every step they’ll be low to the ground, with one leg stretched out behind them (knee grazing the floor), and the leading leg should be bent at the knee, pulling them up.

Exercise 6: Stretcher. Here your trainees should start by sitting on the ground or floor with their legs stretched out in front of them, about shoulder width apart (i.e., their body is in an “L” shape). Their hands should be palm down at their sides, with fingers pointing towards their toes. Now trainees should rise up on their hands and feet, pointing their pelvis at the sky as high as possible. Finally, they’ll return to the start position and repeat.

Exercise 7: Star jumpers. Trainees should start in a relaxed standing position. Their next move is to crouch down, hands on the ground/floor. Finally, they need to explode up – straightening their legs while simultaneously throwing their arms in the air. This final position – with arms outstretched and above their heads – makes them look like a star. As usual, rinse and repeat this move until the circuit interval ends.

The Dark Side of Superbowl Sunday

Hi Everyone

Whether or not you're a football fan there is a very good chance you'll be heading to a Super Bowl party this Sunday.

And as you are fully aware, these parties can be VERY hazardous to your waistline. But hey, it's not hard to keep the pounds from packing on while watching (or ignoring) the Colts vs. the Saints.

Here are FOUR Super Simple tips to keep you slim this Sunday:
