Plan Now for a Great 2008


How are you feeling? Overworked? Overtired? Overstressed? Are you cruising into 2008 or do you feel like your wheels are falling off, your gas tank is on empty and you're in desperate need of a pit stop? If you are too tired to yell the words "pit stop" you are not alone. In a recent Harris Interactive survey only 15% said they were energized by their jobs and 42% said they were burned out.


Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs: What Are Drugmakers Hiding?

Nearly two years after a clinical trial of the cholesterol-lowering drugs Zetia and Vytorin was finished, the results have still not been released by the drugs’ makers (Merck and Schering-Plough).

Yet, close to 800,000 prescriptions for the drugs are written each week in the United States, bringing in close to $4 billion for the year.

The companies have responded to cardiologists’ concerns over the lack of safety data for the drugs by promising to publish only a portion of the results in March, a move that critics are calling highly unusual.

Currently, no one knows whether Zetia and Vytorin are as effective as other cholesterol-lowering medications called statins. If they turn out to be less so, patients may be unnecessarily at risk of heart attacks.

Zetia was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2002 because it was found to lower LDL cholesterol by 15 to 20 percent. Vytorin combines Zetia with Merck’s statin drug, Zocor.

Together, the drugs have acquired close to 20 percent of the U.S. market for cholesterol-lowering drugs.

However, because Zetia and Vytorin work differently than standard statin drugs, cardiologists have expressed concerns that they may not protect the cardiovascular system as much as using a statin does.

Drugmakers Changed the Trial’s Endpoint

Along with announcing that they will only be releasing part of the clinical trial’s results, Merck and Schering-Plough said they had changed the trial’s endpoint, or the final result the study was supposed to measure.

Typically, the trial’s endpoint is supposed to remain constant because otherwise the study’s authors could change their goals to conform to the data they received.

The delay in publishing the study’s results raise further questions as to whether the drug industry is improving their disclosure of clinical trials.

Two years ago drugmakers promised to disclose study results publicly, however they face few penalties for failing to do so.

My client has not lost a pound, Dr Oz, Kit Kats

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share this story with you guys.

One of my clients emailed this to me today:
"Hi Rafael, I have to tell you I started the day thinking I was just going to give up.
I got on the scale this morning and for the 4th week in a row I have not lost a pound. I was very frustrated,
I do everything you say. Eat every 3 or 4 hours, workout, maybe not as much cardio as I could, but still no weight loss. I weigh myself once a week
like you say to do. Thursday mornings, first thing with no clothes on. So when i got on the scale this morning there was still no shift. BUT THEN I LOOKED UP....
I never look at the mirror, but today I did, with my hands on my hips pouting and up-set i noticed something I had never seen before. Everytime i took a deep breath I could see my stomach muscles. I have ABS!!! Then I looked up and down my shoulder were tight and round, my legs always hurt and now I see why, that flab I had in my back is almost completely gone. I can't believe it, my husband tells me all the time but today was the first time I saw it.WOW!!!Thank You. The scale is in the garbage. See you Friday:)"

I thought I'd share that with you guys.

Dr. Oz was on Oprah the other Day and said on National TV what I have been saying for years:"Mesotherapy, the cellulite massages, fat burning creams,the egyptian wraps...NONE of it works! The massages and mesotherapy spread the fat over and over but it does not bun it, your body does not using it for energy, thats why when you stop it comes back. There is no way around it, if you want to lose fat you need to elevate your body temperature, move the muscle and make sure your metabolic rate is working optimally. Losing 7 pounds in one of these treatments and then gaining 9 is not weight loss. He Also Said that this particular section of the weight loss industry makes 6 billion dollars per year. I was at Publix yesterday, reading candy labels. Kit Kats were one of the only ones that DID NOT have any High Fructose Corn Syrup (poison to fat burning) or Partially Hydrogenated Oils (Super Poison for Fat Burning). Yes I bought it and yes I ate it.

Goal setting is still hard for some people. I'll often meet clients who are interested in losing fat and decide that they will start daily cardio, weight train four times per week, eat six small meals, cut calories by 20% and reduce their carb intake.

These are great goals -- but most people are trying to do too much at once. The solution to this is to use the goal snowball effect. Here's how to do it:

1) List five or six behaviors you need to improve or change to reach your goals. What do you need to be doing that you're not doing? What bad habits do you need to kick? What good habits do you need to instill?

2) List these things from easiest to hardest.

3) "Maintain" all your other goals and focus your attention on the first thing on your list (the easiest one.) Spend two weeks just focusing on achieving that goal so that it becomes a habit.

4) Once that change has been made and ingrained, move up to the next item on your list and focus your efforts there.

5) One by one, knock out these changes and/or goals.

For example: Maybe you sleep late. First goal might be to get up 30 mins earlier every day.
Second goal might be to go to the gym as soon as you wake up - and go four times a week instead of three.
Third goal may be to make sure you always eat breakfast.
Fourth goal? Reduce portion sizes at 3 out of 5 meals...and so on.

So in 10 weeks or so - you're getting up earlier - never missing a workout, have done an extra ten workouts, and eaten breakfast everyday (which is a key factor in fat loss) while consuming less calories overall. These goals would "snowball" into a bigger overall effect with long-term success whereas trying to do all things at once would likely result in short term failure.

Wouldn't it feel great to go to the next family gathering or office party in that little dress or those pants that you love, but don't have a chance of squeezing into today? Wouldn't you love to have everyone talking about how much weight you've lost, instead of whispering about how much weight you've gained? Well, here is your chance."
