How to refuel after your workout

Hey Everyone

Rafael here,

Many of us have a great pre-workout and workout routine. We drink plenty of water before and during exercise, warm up, stretch, work the entire body, and even get in some cardio training as well. Then, after the last exercise, we promptly head back to the locker room, change, and journey home.

What so many out there do not realize is the importance of what you do after you work out. You may have done the majority of the work, but how you treat your body in the minutes and hours after you exercise has a direct effect on muscle soreness, muscle strength and growth, and staying hydrated.

Refueling - nutrition is one of the last, but one of the most important, items to do after a workout. When it comes to nutrition, we consider that there are three main elements which have to be looked after:

A.Protein is essential for tissue growth and repair. Since the body is continuously breaking down proteins, our diet must provide sufficient quantities. Although recommended intakes vary and depend on body size and activity, a post-workout protein is almost universally helpful to kickstart muscle repair, recovery, and growth.

B.Branched-chain amino acids also known as BCAAs, containing leucineisoleucine, and valine, are the most effective ways to be lean and strong for life. In cases of calorie restriction or during periods of long or intense exercise, catabolism of muscle tissue could occur when glycogen and blood sugar are not present in sufficient quantities to fuel activity. Amino acids via dietary protein become very important for any athlete, which studies have shown muscles prefer as a source for fuel.
Here is a suggestion: BCAA MATRIX

C.Fast Carbs are used in order to spare protein, replenish glycogen, spike insulin, and speed recovery. After a tough workout, your fuel of blood sugar and glycogen are low. Your body's first priority is correcting blood sugar balance and replenishing glycogen.

NEW Approach HALTS Holiday Weight Gain

New Approach to Halt Weight Gain
by Mike Whitfield, CTT

Every year, from Thanksgiving through Christmas, I would really
"cut loose" on my food and because I'm a Whitfield, I gained
a lot of weight rapidly.

In fact, one year I gained almost 18 pounds in 7 weeks! Then,
I had to work like crazy to get it back off in January. I still remember
showing up to my relative's Christmas parties and feeling
everyone stare at me. I was totally embarrassed.

I would fight this battle year after year and it was frustrating.

But soon, I discovered that these special metabolic finisher
workouts I created for my own clients would help me HALT
my weight gain once and for all.

I experimented with doing metabolic resistance training workouts
and then performing these short 6-minute (or less) high
intensity finishers on my "off days". I would do them in my
backyard or even in my living room if it was too cold outside.

Finally, I realized when January came around, I wouldn't have to
start over. I had kept my weight off for once.

My favorite finishers are superset finishers because they don't
require me to remember much (ha). I especially liked the countdown
style finishers like this one:

Do the following superset, resting only when needed. In the first
superset, you will perform 8 reps of each exercise. In the next superset,
you will perform 7 reps of each. Continue in this fashion until you
complete 1 rep of each exercise.

Lunge Jumps or Alternating Lunges (8/side...1/side)
Decline Triple Stop Pushup (8...1)

Each finisher in the manual is short, but intense. And I guarantee
that if you use these this year, you'll stay lean (or get LEANER).

And because I understand your frustration with this time of
year (because I've been there much like you), I'm giving you
a special offer this week.

You'll get the Finisher Supersets Manual PLUS Metabolic Countdown,
a 4-week metabolic resistance training program that ends with
a countdown finisher to blast even more fat...

... for just $7.

And to make sure you dominate your battle against weight
gain this year, I'm even throwing the same nutrition plan I
have used myself and with men and women who won the Turbulence
Training Contest.

I know what it's like to battle weight gain year after year.
And with these finishers, you'll finally win that battle.

Trust me, if a former fat guy can do it, you can too,

Rafael
The Boot Camp Rebel

P.S. Along with the Superset Finisher Workouts, you'll also get
a 4-week metabolic resistance training program, and my special
nutrition approach that allow you to enjoy yourself this year
AND get leaner.

You got this.

What is in your food?

Happy Monday I hope you got an awesome weekend.... I just finished reading the results from everyone finishing week 2 of the Unwrap a new you in 8 weeks plan. 2 more 5lbs losers...and 3 people lost 3 more pounds...BOOM!!! People...at this rate how can they NOT unwrap a new body on Christmas day... I hope you are getting the results you are looking for, and if you are not...maybe it's time to take action. On to WHAT'S IN YOUR FOOD... I always tend to teach you about carbs, protein and fat...how much you should have...but I don't think I have touched on this subject enough What is actually in the food Garden burgers. Power bars. Protein brownies. Bottled water that makes you thin, young and smart. And we used to wonder what they put in Pop Rocks... These days it’s hard for even die-hard foodies to know what they’re eating or drinking. That’s because food has changed from something that didn’t need a modifier – if it walked, swam, flew or grew out of the ground, it was food – to something that stopped off at Mr. Burns’ nuclear plant on the way to your plate. Did you know that 70% of the Ground Beef in the USA has pink slime...and did you know that all of that pink slime is treated with AMMONIA?

Pink Slime - 70% of America's Beef is Treated with Ammonia

Sunday is one the most wonderful holidays of the year

Hey! Guess what! Sunday is one the most wonderful holidays of the year! No, not Rosh Hashanah, though that is a pretty sweet one, too.

No, September 16 is National Guacamole Day (which is not to be confused with National Spicy Guacamole Day on November 14).

And, as often happens when made up food holidays roll around, Guacamole Day got us thinking about where to get the best guac in town (which, let us be clear, does not necessarily mean the most "authentic" guacamole in town).

Now, the truth about guacamole is that every batch is different and the best way to get the greatest green stuffjust right is to simply make it yourself (it is so easy—hence all the table side preparation around town!)
Now here are 10 Health Benefits of Avocados benefits of avocados
Avocados have been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.

Oral Cancer Defense
Research has shown that certain compounds in avocados are able to seek out pre-cancerous and cancerous oral cancer cells and destroy them without harming healthy cells.
Breast Cancer Protection
Avocado, like olive oil, is high in oleic acid, which has been shown to prevent breast cancer in numerous studies.
Eye Health
Avocados have more of the carotenoid lutein than any other commonly consumed fruit. Lutein protects against macular degeneration and cataracts, two disabling age-related eye diseases.

Lower Cholesterol
Avocados are high in beta-sitosterol, a compound that has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. In one study, 45 volunteers experienced an average drop in cholesterol of 17% after eating avocados for only one week.
Heart Health
One cup of avocado has 23% of the recommended daily value of folate. Studies show that people who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower incidence of heart disease than those who don't. The vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, and glutathione in avocado are also great for your heart.
Stroke Prevention
The high levels of folate in avocado are also protective against strokes. People who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower risk of stroke than those who don't.
Better Nutrient Absorption Research has found that certain nutrients are absorbed better when eaten with avocado. In one study, when participants ate a salad containing avocados, they absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids (a group of nutrients that includes lycopene and beta carotene) than those who didn't include avocados.
Glutathione Source
Avocados are an excellent source of glutathione, an important antioxidant that researchers say is important in preventing aging, cancer, and heart disease.
Vitamin E Powerhouse
Avocados are the best fruit source of vitamin E, an essential vitamin that protects against many diseases and helps maintains overall health.

Now the Chips...that is another story so While those 10 reasons are GREAT..remember that healthy fat still has calories and the chips...well they are chips

Make sure you have protein and enjoy....
Now in case you over do it with the Guac or any other foods....I have a SOLUTION:

NEVER Grill Meat, unless you do this

If you love a good barbeque, you must read this article below by my friend and Nutrition Specialist, Mike Geary.  It shows you some really important info about carcinogenic compounds that are found in that grilled meat that we all love.  But don't worry, Mike also shows you the exact trick you need that eliminates these cancer-causing compounds while still enjoying your barbeque!

NEVER Grill Meat, Unless You Do This
by Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist
Author of Best Seller:  The Truth About Six Pack Abs

Most people aren't aware that when you cook meat (whether it's grilled, broiled, or seared) there are carcinogenic compounds that can form called HCA's (heterocyclic amines).  Now don't panic...you ingest various carcinogens all the time, even with some vegetables. You can always protect yourself with more antioxidants.

Please Note:  When you cook meat in a water base as opposed to grilling, broiling, or searing, you eliminate the harmful HCAs. So for example, meats cooked in a soup, or meats cooked in a crock pot will not have the problem of the carcinogenic HCAs and is a healthier way to cook meat.

But let's face it... grilled meat tastes awesome and there's no way I'm giving up my grass-fed steak from the grill, or my grass-fed burgers!

That's why it's important to know that there's a way you can use spices to both counteract, and also drastically reduce the carcinogens formed when you grill meat...

Here's the trick:

If you're going to grill meats, marinating meats for at least several hours beforehand in liquid mixtures that contain rosemary and other herbs/spices can dramatically help to reduce HCA's (heterocyclic amines), which are those carcinogenic compounds that can form when meats are grilled.  It appears that the highly potent antioxidants in these herbs prevent HCA formation.  So using rosemary, thyme, garlic, oregano and other spices in a meat marinade before grilling meats can drastically reduce any carcinogens that normally would form on grilled meat and give you a healthier meal, that's also very tasty!

The antioxidants in rosemary and thyme from a marinade were specifically cited in studies at being powerful inhibitors of HCA formation when grilling meats.  But it was also noted that other spices such as garlic, oregano, and others can help to prevent HCA formation as well, so I suggest using a variety, which tastes great anyway!

One more important point about grilling meat:

Remember that the more well-done a meat is cooked, the higher concentration of carcinogenic HCA's can form, so rare, medium-rare, or medium are healthier choices than well-done.  I've never understood why anybody would want to ruin a good steak by burning it to oblivion anyway.  But hey, if you're one of those folks that likes your steaks well-done, just remember that you're eating a lot more carcinogens than a steak that's cooked less, so make sure to load up on your antioxidants (spices, teas, berries, etc) to help combat those extra carcinogens.

Washing down your barbequed meal with a glass of unsweetened iced tea (rich in antioxidants) and also a good salad with lots of raw veggies can provide the antioxidants needed to counteract the effect of HCAs in your body from grilled meat.

By the way, even charring vegetables on the grill creates different carcinogens such as acrylamides, so don't think that the negative effect of charring only applies to meats.

Hey, we all love a great barbeque, so no need to give that up just because of HCAs or acrylamides, but at least now you know how to counteract the effects of these in your body to protect yourself, and also how to use spices to drastically reduce the formation of HCAs on grilled meat!

Enjoy that next barbeque in a healthier way!

(Fitness Boot Camp) Time to Improve Your Self Image

Time to Improve Your Self Image Happy Monday South Florida Boot Campers I have a cool post for you today: Stop being "realistic" - dream BIGGER There is a secret out there that leads to instantly having a better self-image. Before we let you in on this secret, consider that poor self-image is often related to what a person looks like, namely, overall body size. Where does this body-size-related self-image come from? Why is “thin in”? Male movie stars of many decades ago did not have the physiques they do today, with the exception of whichever actor was playing Tarzan at the time. A chiseled body on a man was an anomaly in the 1930’s, ‘40s, ‘50s and even ‘60s. Nowadays, a man with the body of Humphrey Bogart won’t get too far on the big screen. As for the women, standards haven’t changed: Waist sizes in today’s starlets are just as small as they were many decades ago. But we didn’t hear of body image disorders back then. Today, seems that’s all we hear about. What’s going on? Well, the fame of fashion models may have something to do with it, plus all the magazines and Internet space devoted to “who’s wearing what” in the entertainment world, plus the skimpy and seductive outfits that today’s female recording artists wear. Self-worth for many young people—even not so young (a la Demi Moore), is tied to physical appearance. So here’s that little secret: Rather than focus on what your body looks like, focus on what it can do. This small shift in thinking will produce magnificent results. At age 12, Cheryl Haworth weighed 240 pounds. By age 17 and standing almost 5-10, Cheryl weighed just over 300 pounds. These measurements are enough to sink the spirit of any growing girl and demolish her with never-ending self-hatred. However, Cheryl didn’t worry about what she looked like. Instead she focused on what her enormous body could do. She played softball, and this one day (when she was 12) led her to a gym where the sights and sounds of weight lifting mesmerized her. She was hooked. At age 17 she took the bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in weight lifting. This doesn’t mean that the cure for any individual with a self-image problem is to perform weight lifting at Olympic level caliber. But you get the point. Set performance-related goals, such as: • Run one mile outside nonstop • Bench press 100 pounds (women); 175 pounds (men) • Get through a step aerobics class without having to sit out and rest • Run 12 mph on the treadmill for one minute—without holding on • Master inline skating • Complete an indoor climbing route rated at least 5.10 • Earn a green belt, then purple belt, then black belt in karate There are endless “what your body can do” goals that you can devise. When you begin concentrating on effort and performance, the vanity aspect fades into the background. If you’re distraught over your thunder thighs, imagine how proud of them you’ll be when they can complete a five-mile hilly hike with ease. If you’re distressed over a receding hairline, guys, it won’t matter so much when you realize your bench press is progressing like a demon. We’d all like to change something about our body that we have little or no control over. Every women would love to zap away all the hair follicles on her legs so she never has to shave again. Many men would like to be taller. Rather than stew over that which we cannot change, let’s expend energy on changing what we can change: stamina, strength, fitness and health. Don’t get caught up with “body types.” Instead, get caught up with body strength, body endurance and body fitness. Eat healthful foods not because you want to look like a Victoria’s Secret model, but because you want to slash your risk of breast cancer and be around to see your grandkids grow up. It’s always the right time to improve your self-image, no matter where you’re at on the continuum. For more assistance in getting on the path to loving yourself more, give us a call. The 1,000 Rep Workout and 24/7 Fat Burning

It's a CRAZY Tuesday people...

So Saturday I tested a NEW Variation of the 1,000 Rep Workout. Monday I tested it with some of my bootcampers and here is what it looked like.:

This WORKOUTS HAS 10 Stations...At Every Station you will perform 20 Reps.

You will time how long it takes you to finish each round. The End Goal is to finish 5 rounds (1,000 Reps Total)
  1. Kettlebell swing
  2. Crunches on a swiss ball or bosu
  3. Row (Using a suspension strap like the TRX or jungle Gym)
  4. Chest Presses (Using a suspension strap like the TRX or Jungle Gym)
  5. Resistance Band biceop curls
  6. Resistance Band tricep extensions
  7. Single leg Step ups right leg
  8. Single leg step up left leg
  9. Spedgehammer Slams into a tire or sand
  10. Dumbbell side lateral raises
You can print this out, try it at the gym or at home...time yourself..

This workout not only is high volume but the afterburn is intense...you will continue to Burn calories for a long time even after you finish.

Now..for a week or so I have been giving you a variety of KEYS to burning Fat ALL THE TIME

4 Strategies You MUST Employ To Ensure You Never Go A Minute Without Burning Fat

There's no way around it, if you want to burn fat all the time, your body must be in a fat burning state all the time.

And there's only one way that's possible: Your body's fat burning hormones must be optimized 24/7 and your metabolism must be elevated around the clock. Fortunately, we do both with the use of four very strategic methods employed in the 24/7 Fat Loss system:

1) Optimized Nutrient Combining™

You likely already know that you should be eating a mix of high quality proteins, healthy fats, and fibrous carbohydrates daily.

What you may not know, however, is that how you combine these nutrients can and will have a profound effect on your body's hormonal response to each meal, and therefore your fat loss.

Avoiding the "Deadly Combination"

If your goal is to avoid fat storage, it's certainly in your best interest to avoid the presence of fatty acids and storage hormones (such as insulin) in your blood stream at the same time.

Why, because Storage + Fat = Fat Storage, and you don't want that.

When you eat fat, fatty acids are released in to the blood. When you eat carbs, insulin is released in to the blood to shuttle blood sugar to its storage sites.

Putting two and two together, you can likely see that the two nutrients you'll want to avoid eating together are carbs and fat.

Again, carbs cause the storage hormone insulin to be released. Fat ingestion leads to large amounts of fatty acids in the blood. Insulin + fat = fat storage.

To avoid this "deadly combination", follow this simple rule: Consume protein with every meal. Add either carbs or fat (but not both).

So now that you know which nutrients to eat together (and those to avoid), when should you eat a Protein + Carb meal and when should you eat meals that contain Protein + Fat?

The answer:

2) Carb Syncing™

Contrary to popular belief, the key to fat loss is not avoiding carbs, it's learning to eat them only when your body is most primed to "handle" them best. This comes at two different times of day:
  1. In the morning
  2. After intense exercise
For one, loads of research has shown that carbohydrate tolerance is highest in the morning, making it a no brainer to consume a large portion of your daily carb intake at breakfast when your body is best equipped to process them.

If you're in to snacking like we are, mid-morning is another great time for carbs.

The second "best" time to eat carbs is after intense exercise since your body is ultra primed to suck them up for recovery and energy replenishment, and NOT fat storage.

Want a double whammy of carbohydrate sensitivity? Schedule your workouts in the morning and consume ALL of your carbs early in the day.

We call this "best of both worlds" scenario Carb Syncing™ because you "sync" your carbohydrate intake with a time window in which your body is literally CRAVING carbs.

Carb Syncing™ and Optimized Nutrient Combining™ are the two daily tools you'll need to keep your body in a fat burning state 24 hours a day, but there's also a very important long term strategy that is an absolute must if you want to keep your metabolism happy week after week:

3) Strategic Overfeeding™

Any time you decrease your calorie intake in an effort to shed those stubborn pounds, your body responds by derailing your metabolism and decreasing levels of fat burning hormones as an anti-starvation mechanism .

In fact, after only a single week of dieting your metabolism is only operating at 50% of its fat burning potential – that means you'll be missing out on a TON of fat loss in the coming weeks unless you do something about it.

The good news is that while it takes roughly a week of moderate dieting for fat burning hormones to take a plunge, it only takes one day of cheating, or overfeeding, to boost those levels back up to baseline.

By frequently resetting your metabolism with strategically placed high-calorie Cheat Days, you can essentially have your cake and eat it too while watching your waistline continually shrink week after week.

Up next, the only research proven way to increase metabolism around the clock:

4) Metabolic Resistance Training™

As mentioned previously, most exercise doesn't do anything for your metabolism over the long term.

Spend 45 minutes on the treadmill and maybe burn 1/10th of one pound of fat.

<Sarcasm> Wow. That's amazing. </Sarcasm>

Fact is, if you are truly looking to burn fat around the clock, you absolutely must be performing exercise that has a prolonged effect on your metabolism for hours after your session is done.

In fact, research has shown that a specific form of exercise called Metabolic Resistance Training (MRT) can increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours post workout – that's TWO DAYS of elevated metabolism from a single 40-minute workout.

Do you know how much MORE fat you'll burn from one of those workouts?

Yes, WAY more than "cardio" or traditional high rep circuit training, that's for sure.

So what exactly is Metabolic Resistance Training™?

MRT is a series of non-competing total body resistance training exercises linked together with incomplete cardiovascular recovery.

Now, that may sound like a mouthful, so let's break it down. For example, a workout may start with these four movements:
  1. Dumbbell Lunges x 8 reps per side
  2. Dumbbell Chest Press x 8 reps
  3. Goblet Squats x 8 reps
  4. Dumbbell Row x 8 reps per side

No rest between movements.

Because there is no rest between each exercise, there is not enough time for your cardiovascular system to fully recover (i.e. incomplete recovery).

The exercises are "non-competing" because they transition from upper body to lower body, allowing the muscles of your upper body to rest while your lower body works (and vice versa).

Essentially, you're providing a HUGE metabolic stimulus to your entire muscular and cardiovascular systems at the SAME time through strategically designed full body resistance training combined with minimal rest. This is what allows for an unparalleled exercise-induced increase in metabolism for hours and hours after your session—something we call the AFTERBURN.

You want the afterburn, and with MRT you'll be getting PLENTY of it.

Simply put, when you combine the metabolism power of Metabolic Resistance Training with the hormone-regulating power of Optimized Nutrient Timing, Carb Syncing, and Strategic Overfeeding, the only thing your body can do is respond by burning fat 24/7.

The science is simply too strong, and the program is simply too smart.

The Truth About Bodyweight Cardio

By Craig Ballantyne

Bodyweight Cardio<<

The truth about Bodyweight Cardio is that it has the worst
name in Turbulence Training history.

I'm not sure what I was thinking when I put that label on it,
but I'm not 3 workouts deep and pretty much stuck with it.

A better physiological description would be, "Bodyweight
Interval Training" or "Bodyweight Metabolic Conditioning".

I call bodyweight circuits a hybrid of strength and interval
training. The bodyweight exercises used in these particular
workouts are not so intense that they will cause you to gain
muscle, but neither would you be able to work as hard as you
can during sprint training.

You won't burn as many calories in 30 minutes of bodyweight cardio
as you would in 30 minutes of running at a fast pace. Truth
be told, only kettlebell training has the ability to burn as
many calories within a workout as running at a hard pace.

Think about this...each pushup you do must burn less than 1/3
of a calorie. After all, if you do 100 pushups in 3 minutes
(that's my score in the Martin Rooney 3-minute pushup test),
there's no way that I'm burning more than 15 calories per
minute (not when running at a fast pace only burns 16-20
calories per minute).

So in terms of "within workout" calorie burning, bodyweight
cardio does not beat regular cardio.

That said, because bodyweight cardio is a combination of resistance
training and interval training, you should get greater
post-workout calorie and fat burning benefits.

And knowing what we know today about metabolic resistance training,
and based on Alwyn Cosgrove's description of the two types of
MRT that he gave us, it is easy to place bodyweight cardio in
the metabolic conditioning category (higher reps, less
soreness from a session, sustained high heart rate).

As Alwyn said, "Your body doesn't really know what it's doing, all
it knows is that it gets your heart rate up."

So the key and challenge is to create bodyweight cardio workouts
that put the greatest demand on our cardiovascular systems
(to burn a lot of calories within the workout) while taking
advantage of the depletion results from the interval-like and
resistance properties of bodyweight training to increase the
between-session calorie burn (like we get from regular weight
training).

To do this, we should use the non-competing exercise rule we
use in our TT workouts. If creating a circuit, going from a
lower-body exercise to an upper-body exercise is most appropriate,
as is focusing on as many single-leg exercises as possible.

The "Big 5" circuit approach works well for this:
Squat, Push, Pull, Single-Leg, Total Body Ab, as does the Big 6
(addition of a jump exercise at the start) and Big 7 (further
addition of a sprint type exercise at the end of the circuit).

Bottom Line: Bodyweight cardio will help you get that lean,
athletic look, even when you don't have access to any equipment.

You won't build a lot of muscle, but you can burn quite a few
calories and lose body fat almost as fast as with any other
TT workout (of course, there will always be people who respond
to this workout at extreme levels - and that's why you need
to experiment and find out what works best for you).
